New Post

(Original post date: February 8th, 2011)

My life has been kind of crazy these days… see I had drafted up this post on Jan. 16th where I was going to write about shooting my film. Now it’s a week into February and I’ve already shot my film.

Things are good. Life is a little on hold at the moment because school is keeping me really busy. I just dropped the cognitive science class I am taking this semester because I don’t think I could keep up with the materials given the fact that I have a film to work on (but I’m taking another upper division film theory class, so it’s still a full-time / 10-credit semester).

I have yet to start editing. Currently in the process of watching all my footage, labelling them and syncing up the sound files. The shoot didn’t go as well as I had planned… I missed about 5 crucial shots that I needed (which was planned, but we simply ran out of time to do). What’s done is done. Now I know how to improve and what to change for next time. (Yeah… next time… meaning there’s pick-up’s to do…)

Anyway. Lots of things coming up. I’d like to update and write more often but time and heart are tricky things these days! ‘Till next time.

2010 Summation and Reflection

(Original post date: December 30th, 2010)

If you can let go that easily, then the fault of the hurt I feel lies in myself for I placed more weight and value on our friendship than you ever did — this is how I felt for the last few months of 2010. But I’ve come to the realization (at the advice of close friends) that some friendships are disposable and rather small in significance compared to the life-long ones I should be focused on. I shouldn’t have gotten so hung up on the miscommunication, misunderstandings and general confusion that occurred. No doubt it has greatly affected my emotions, but I’ve learned to look at the bigger picture. Perhaps this is all for the better. I can’t change people’s pre-conceptions of me. I’ve got to tell myself to let things go more easily… or put less weight on my friendships and not expect so much in return from friends. (Funny, this sounds exactly like a post back in March)

While men were busy growing mustaches in November, I was running around the city catching shows – 14, to be exact. I think that was the height of my entertainment expenses this year, at $113 for tickets alone.

October had me working on 3 film shoots. I also attended my very first VIFF and pumpkin patch, and saw Chantal Kreviazuk live with the VSO.

September was a busy month. I was away for 5 days on Bowen Island shooting a film the first week school started, which was right after I went on a 4-day road trip on Vancouver Island with my family. Then I worked on another film shoot and at Woodward’s.

The two summer months of July and August were all work and not really any play. It felt like I was working full-time at our school that had yet to open then. But I did get to see Joan Jett live at the PNE at the end of August, and I managed to pass my summer linguistics class without going to 3/4 of the lectures (there goes my tuition!) OOOh, I almost forgot: I stage managed Resounding Scream Theatre’s production of Brink: a farce tragedy. And apparently I started being a fan of The Veronicas (thanks, Joyce).

May and June were chillaxing months. Except for the occasional shifts at work, shows, film screenings and a private screening of my film Straight Forward, my calendar looks pretty blank…

I think I was still finishing my video back in April. I was taking 3 classes, saw a couple of shows and attended a birthday party over which I lost a dear friend. Later in the year (just a couple of months ago) we got over it and became friends again… though I’m pretty sure all her friends still hate me.

March was a busy birthday month although I don’t think I was busy playing Santa. Other than shooting my video and school, nothing much happened.

Vancouver was decked in Olympic spirit in February. I wasn’t especially ecstatic but I enjoyed it. I went to see a whole bunch of free shows at the Place des Francophone on Granville Island. And during those two weeks off I AD’d a film.

January marked my employment with SFU Woodward’s. I also worked on a 4th-year film (I am now 4th-year myself). And it looks like I started the year on a pretty low end (re-reading my own blog posts) because I was confused and stuck between a rock and a hard place – which was the catalyst that led to the fallout between my friend and I in April.

I can’t believe this has been my year. Sounds like I’ve accomplished a lot, and time was partly wisely-spent. I feel like I should have learned a lot, too, but reading back on my blog posts, it doesn’t seem like I’ve grown much (despite making a major decision). I still get tripped by the same problems when it comes to friendship. It is not as easy as I thought… but I will continue to work on it!

Here’s to hoping the year to come be filled with laughter, joy, happiness, and spontaneity, friends!

Nights In

(original post date: december 25th, 2010)

It’s past mid-December, Christmas music floods the radio, school’s out and the parties never cease to exist. And I gotta admit, I am going through a “clubbing” phase. But without friends who are keen clubbers I am reduced to listening to DJ mixes on soundcloud or grooveshark all throughout the night, especially when I know there’s a party downtown that I could crash.

Ugh. I am SO LAME =.=

In Another Life

(Original post date: December 4th, 2010)

I’m sorry for making you feel so miserable that I probably ruined your night. I’m sorry I worked up the courage to open my mouth and speak to you. I’m sorry that you can’t stand me so much that you have to turn away as soon as I try to say something. I’m sorry you saw me. I’m sorry that I can’t stop looking at you. I’m sorry that I was dancing with your friends. I’m sorry for making you feel awkward when I’m in the room (because I know you do). I’m sorry things got so out of hand. I’m sorry for making you feel uncomfortable around me. I’m sorry for having sent you emotional texts. I’m sorry you had to stand outside in the cold in that cute dress just so you can get away from me and take a little break. I’m sorry for not giving you enough time. I’m sorry that I couldn’t stay away. I’m sorry for wanting to make things better so I can be a part of your life again. I’m sorry for invading your “scene”. I’m sorry that we can’t talk anymore, let alone hang out. I’m sorry that you probably regret for ever being my friend once. I’m sorry that you won’t get to know me. I’m sorry that every time I hear those songs I’ll still think of you. I’m sorry that I keep wishing upon the stars that when I look at them, you are too. I’m sorry we won’t get to celebrate the holidays with each other’s well wishes. I’m sorry that I want to avoid running into you again so that you could enjoy your life. I’m sorry I couldn’t leave you alone. I’m sorry for being such a weirdo.

I’m sorry. The way I’m holding onto you probably makes you feel like you can’t breathe. I’m sorry. But I promise you I’m not a stalker!!! I just want to know what’s up because I can’t stand your mysterious silence…

I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Maybe we’ll be friends again. Some time… in another life :(

BUSY November

(Original post date: December 1st, 2010)

While men were busy growing their mustaches for Movember, I’ve been running around town seeing lots and lots of shows – 14, to be exact. 14 shows in 30 days… which is about 1 show every 2 days, and all that includes 7 theatre shows, 5 concerts and 2 dance shows!!!

THEATRE

Night, Mother (at the PAL Theatre) – awesome show. Heartbreaking and memorable; made me tear up. Depressingly inspiring story!

Iphigenia at Aulis (SFU Fall 2010 Mainstage) – weirdly comtemporary, can’t say I completely enjoyed it… it was a mix of a whole lot of wacky stuff

4 weeks of directing projects at SFU (2 short plays each show in each week) – Shows have been getting better and better as the weeks progressed.

Hamlet at the Havana – very impressive rendition of the original text (1st Quattro) in a tiny tiny venue for something as huge as Hamlet. They were able to use the space very well, and the acting was superb, too. It made for a nice traditional Shakespearean experience.

CONCERTS

Passion World Tour 2010: Vancouver (Christian rock/pop concert) – tens and thousands of young people came out to Rogers Arena that night. It was incredible to see so many people praising God at the same time. Personally it wasn’t as empowering as the last time I was there.

Hard Rubber Orchestra – one of two concerts for which I operated the Eon. They felt like a really big jazz band… and it was a really loud concert. Good thing I was up on the tech ledge, which was two floor above the stage. But still it felt like I should have had ear plugs. Can’t comprehend how the people sitting below me weren’t deaf by the end of the show.

Barry Truax – the second of two concerts I worked. Still don’t really understand ‘electroacoustic’, but generally a relaxing concert. Some parts of the music stood out while most of the other pieces felt like they were one long song.

Vancouver Symphony Orchestra’s Lord of the Rings Symphony – a little disappointed, gotta say… the entire time it felt like they were playing ‘The Shire’ theme over and over again. The soloist probably hogged 70% of the limelight. I’ve heard better concerts from the VSO. Or maybe it’s the conductor – the orchestra didn’t sound together, and the choir was really weak compared to the instruments. And mic’ing the choir just made it worse.

The Oh Wells at Shindig 2010 – annual ‘underground’ music competition presented by UBC’s campus radio station CiTR. Got to know them through a friend of a friend the first time I went to the Shindig event at the end of October and have been listening to them ever since. Went to hear them live again at the semi’s… now they’re advancing onto the finals, which will take place next week :) I can’t wait!!!

DANCE

Faculty dance show at SFU – have to say it’s one of the best dance shows I’ve ever seen… maybe it’s because of the new space that we’re in or perhaps it was the choreography. I was impressed by the composition and movement of human bodies. A thoroughly enjoyable show.

Experiments – a scientific research inspired dance show. Liked how all tech elements fused together to create the performance when usually some parts of tech could be distracting. Still don’t understand contemporary dance though :(

So 14 shows later and $113 poorer (excluding all food and beverage consumed before/ during/ after shows), I had a very arts-fulfilling month. I doubt I’ll have the same bout of energy to pull another record-breaking statistic in December though. I’m hoping to hone my creative energy on my film this month!

Lyrical Inspiration

(Original post date: November 17th, 2010)

Lately I haven’t been able to stop listening to The Oh Wells – an indie band from Vancouver, B.C. They’re a friend of a friend of a friend’s band who are currently competing in CjSF radio’s Shindig event, where 33 bands battle it out (3 per week, and winners from each week advance to the semis) for prizes in studio time and recording deals.

Granted, they’re not the best when it comes to singing and harmony (they sound flat most of the time), but some songs are definitely worth a listen for their quirky lyrics and unique melodies, such as “Is It Too Late to Apologize?”

Wait before you say goodbye

Would you let me apologize

You did things the way you should

You deserve a girl from Hollywood

I don’t think you understand that I am kind of stuck the way I am

Or “Closure” — both songs which speak to me and resonants with what I am feeling recently.

Ohhh this is the end

I’m not alone

I’ve got my friends

I will move on

I’m learning how to get along, to get along with me

And sometimes the songs are just encouraging and inspiring.

I’m gonna put my heart to better use

’cause there are parts of me that I don’t wanna excuse

They’ve advanced to the semis and will be playing at the Railway Club on November 30th. I am looking forward to it!

Remembering…

I can’t believe it’s been almost a month since my last post in October. A lot has happened and my heart has grown hard and cold.

Yesterday was Remembrance Day. We’re supposed to pay tribute for those who fought/still fighting for our country. Lest we forget, right? But all I could remember is how your eyes pierced my soul last night. I was all hung up on you since that first time we exchanged glances and half-smiles last night. It was like you could see right through me. So much (or little) has happened, and so many things are left unsaid. Unspoken thoughts took over as I catch glimpses of you throughout the night. I have no idea what you think of me now, and even though I have every intention on finding out, I can’t because you won’t let me. One glance and a half-smile are not good enough answers. Why why why! I’m still scratching my head searching for a logical answer, dumbfounded by the confusion this whole ordeal has caused me.

I can’t seem to forget you looking at me before whispering to your friend after you saw me dancing with my friends by the table near the dance floor. Images of you dancing remain in my mind. It kills me that we are further apart now than before we even knew each other. It kills me that I have to secretly indulge in the beautiful smiles drawn on your face. And it kills me that you’ve cut me out of your life. Losing friends is one of the hardest things in life. I’ve only really lost one friend, and now you make the count two… especially without an explanation it is extra difficult.

I get tired of dancing and finds a comfy chair to rest my legs. I watch the sea of girls dancing and enjoyed the down time. Ironically the loud upbeat music calmed me, and I thought for a second that I could get through the night without feeling devastated. Then I go back to the dance floor and found you two people away from me. Thoughts of you that I was about to put away came rushing back like a tsunami. Why did I ever think that seeing you one last time was a good idea? I linger and let the music drown out my patheticalness. Still, by the end of the night I could not muster up the courage to talk to you – as if cutting off all means of communication with me isn’t a big enough hint already. Excuse me for wanting some answers, but I wasn’t willing to trade for a sour “friendship”. So I held back, moped, and found comfort in my bed. Who am I to say that I’m not used to my unsuccessful romantic pursuits and fruitless love life?

An interviewee in the Vancouver edition of the “It Gets Better Project” video says “living itself is a political act.” So I will remember the dead and the past, and carry on living. And this time, I will put my heart to better use.
