Lately I haven’t been able to stop listening to The Oh Wells – an indie band from Vancouver, B.C. They’re a friend of a friend of a friend’s band who are currently competing in CjSF radio’s Shindig event, where 33 bands battle it out (3 per week, and winners from each week advance to the semis) for prizes in studio time and recording deals.
Granted, they’re not the best when it comes to singing and harmony (they sound flat most of the time), but some songs are definitely worth a listen for their quirky lyrics and unique melodies, such as “Is It Too Late to Apologize?”
Wait before you say goodbye
Would you let me apologize
You did things the way you should
You deserve a girl from Hollywood
I don’t think you understand that I am kind of stuck the way I am
Or “Closure” — both songs which speak to me and resonants with what I am feeling recently.
Ohhh this is the end
I’m not alone
I’ve got my friends
I will move on
I’m learning how to get along, to get along with me
And sometimes the songs are just encouraging and inspiring.
I’m gonna put my heart to better use
’cause there are parts of me that I don’t wanna excuse
They’ve advanced to the semis and will be playing at the Railway Club on November 30th. I am looking forward to it!
